CHIROPRACTIC CARE
Relaxation / More Comfort / Better Sleep
What Is Chiropractic Adjustment?
Chiropractic adjustment is a type of spinal manipulation by licensed chiropractors (D. C.) which promotes gentle relaxation, more comfort, proper posture and better overall health and wellbeing by aligning the individual vertebrae of the spine. Chiropractors will use different adjustments techniques for different sections of the spine, depending upon the patients condition, sensitivity and medical history. Techniques include various traditional manual (hand) adjustment techniques, an activator (a small mechanical device which makes a clicking sounds and delivers small taps or thumps) along the spine and an ArthroStim® electromechanical activator. Studies report chiropractic adjustment is safe and effective treatment for back and neck pain when used appropriately by a licensed acupuncturist.
Why Is a Chiropractic Adjustment Included in an IIP Session?
During the IIP Session the chiropractic adjustment usually follows the gentle relaxation of the therapeutic massage and energy work (Qigong and Reiki). With the back and neck in a relaxed, comfortable state, it is relatively easy to gently adjust the spine into proper alignment. The chiropracter will review the medical history and ask if there are any special requests or considerations before making any adjustments.
Chiropractic adjustment is optional and may not be appropriate for some people. Please make your concerns, if any, known to the chiropractor before being adjusted.
History of Chiropractic Care
The term “chiropractic” adjustment was created by Daniel David Palmer who founded the Palmer School of Chiropractic in 1897. Prior to D. D. Palmer, there was a long history of using spinal manipulations and manuvering lower extremities to ease low back pain around the world including writings in China (2700 B. C.) and Greece (1500 B. C.) and European physicians starting with the bonesetter guilds of Medieval Europe (which were the basis for the term “orthopedic” medicine). The famous Greek physician, Hippocrates, published texts detailing the importance of spinal manipulations, concluding “Get knowledge of the spine, for this is the requisite for many diseases”.
Over the later part of the 20th century, chiropractors were recognized as medical professionals in all fifty states (from Kansas in 1917 to Louisiana in 1974) which coincided with a modified medical school curriculum being adopted in chiropractic schools, the increased licensing requirements for chiropractors and the use of evidence-based review of randomized clinical studies to determine benefits for medical conditions. Currently there is a growing body of evidence supporting the use of chiropractic adjustments by a skilled and experienced chiropractor to benefit low back pain, one of the most frequent sources of chronic pain in veterans.
Osteopathic physicians (D.O.), physical therapists (P.T.) as well as licensed massage therapists and Asian bodyworkers also perform various types of spinal manipulations for medical conditions, general health and wellbeing.
